Yonsei Cancer Hospital Heavy Ion Therapy Center

Yonsei Medical Center introduced the heavy ion cancer treatment facility for the first time in Korea. It is capable of accommodating about 1,200 cancer patients each year. It will have facilities that can provide accurate and prompt treatment regardless of the virus's outbreak location by using fixed and rotating treatment machines. The underground area consists of heavy ion cancer treatment facilities, and the ground area, a complex facility equipped with educational research facilities and a music hall. It is located between Yonsei University and Yonsei Medical Center to revitalize the entire complex. The heavy ion cancer treatment facility consists of three rooms: a fixed treatment room and two gantry treatment rooms. The medical spaces located on the fifth basement floor up to the first basement floor were intended to create a treatment environment suitable for the treatment facility introduced for the first time in Korea. The Azalea Hill (sunken space) is placed to create a healing space where you can feel natural to provide a pleasant treatment environment in contrast to the thick concrete walls built to block the radiation. The exterior design of the building embodies the form in which the heavy carbon ion particles of the heavy ion therapy machine are discharged from the accelerator almost at the speed of light. Horizontal aluminum louvers spiral around the exterior's transparent and clean curtain wall, like heavy ion particles that rotate inside the accelerator. In addition, the music hall located on the north side is designed to reveal the interior space to the outside so that the reflection of the light created by the curtain wall forms a harmony with the entire building during the day, and the interior lighting unveils the shape of the music hall at night.
