LG Arts Center Seoul

The LG Group established a group-wise central R&D center in Magok New Town and constructed the LG Arts Center to provide a top-level multipurpose performance hall in the same area as part of social and public contribution. The goal was to have two facilities with different roles reach a balance according to the surrounding environment and trends. We developed a design that could position them as local landmarks through a simple and neat appearance in form. The building stands on a 100m x 100m square plane, and its diagonal axes run north-south and east-west. The LG Arts Center will be placed on the east side of this square volume and the LG Science Hall on the west. The volume of LG Art Center, which forms the main volume, is three stories tall, but the LG Science Hall has two floors. It integrates the whole and implies that there are two facilities while realizing an appropriate volume suitable for the park. The rooftop of the low-volume (Science Hall) can be used as a roof terrace and roof garden to enjoy various programs in harmony with the surrounding rich natural environment, providing the stage for various outdoor activities. The interior space of the building consists of three main elements: the Step Atrium connecting the subway passageway to the lobby, the Tube penetrating the building from the ground floor to the north and south, and the Gate Arc in the shape of an inclined arc covering three floors. It comprises a 1,335-seat LG Signature Hall and a 365-seat variable black box called U+ Stage. The LG Signature Hall is a multipurpose performance hall that introduced VABS to accommodate performances in various genres, such as orchestras, operas, musicals, and plays. It calms the confusion and distraction that visitors coming to this complex space, which accommodates various programs, may feel and presents a neat and dignified atmosphere.
