GIMPO International Airport Domestic Terminal Remodeling

Gimpo International Airport’s Domestic Terminal was originally constructed as an international terminal in 1980 as the first airport of Korea. 30 years later in 2009, the airport was remodeled, making improvements to outdated facilities. The remodeling focused on building an airport that passengers can use comfortably, pleasantly, and quickly and reducing energy while considering the terminal’s features and maintaining Gimpo Airport’s distinct identity. The most prominent change was the design of the ceiling that took its theme from the curves of hanbok (Korean traditional dress) and of the eaves of hanok (Korean traditional house). Aluminum rods, which were used as sound-absorbing material, applied to the ceiling, turned indoor reverberation time to the optimum level through micro pores, and this enhanced the design both functionally and aesthetically. Also, wood and warm colored materials were used for the interior for the human scale airport to create a cozy atmosphere. The outer canopy borrowed the language of the existing roof, translating it into a natural curve. The concrete bars in the waiting area, looking as though they block the area, were removed and the curtain wall on the front side was supported with rib glass to secure a sense of openness. The moving walk was introduced to the concourse, which is narrow, and the space to install the walk was designed with a curve that is round in section. Also, Korea’s best airport observatory was constructed, and the dark and dim outside space between office buildings was developed into an atrium to provide a new place to take a rest for both passengers and staff.
