The groundbreaking ceremony for the Nodeul Global Art Island—a project designed by Heatherwick Studio and Gansam—was held on October 21 at the lawn plaza on Nodeul Island. As a key initiative of Hangang Renaissance 2.0: The Great Hangang Project, the ceremony began as Seoul Mayor Se-hoon Oh, Thomas Heatherwick, and Gansam’s Principal Tae-sung Kim arrived at Nodeul Island via the Han River water bus. The event featured guest introductions, a project briefing, presentations by Thomas Heatherwick and Gansam’s Chief Architect Kyo-nam Chin, followed by a congratulatory speech by Mayor Oh, a simulation video screening, and a symbolic groundbreaking performance.

Centered around the main concept of “Sound Scape,” Nodeul Global Art Island aims to create a place where people can awaken their senses—walking, listening, discovering, and connecting with others in a lively, immersive environment. Rather than confining culture within museums or galleries, the design integrates art, landscape, and public programs to form an open stage accessible to all. Elements that detract from the site’s charm, such as heavy traffic and infrastructure, have been minimized to highlight the unique beauty of the Han River.

We focused on the essential goal of creating a joyful and vibrant place for citizens, exploring architectural concepts, design visions, and the value of technological innovation. Our aim is to reshape Seoul’s urban landscape while offering citizens a daily experience where art and nature coexist.- Chief Architect Kyo-nam Chin of Gansam

The project aspires for Nodeul Island to become not only a physically connected space that brings people together across the river but also a joyful cultural destination offering relaxation, engagement, and diverse experiences against the backdrop of Seoul’s beautiful cityscape.
